What Are Allergies? 🌿
Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance, such as pollen, pet dander, or certain foods. These substances are generally harmless but can cause discomfort for those with allergies.
Common Allergy Symptoms 🤒
- Sneezing
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Itchy eyes, nose, or throat
Types of Allergies 🌷🐶
- Seasonal Allergies: Caused by pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. (This is what we’re talking about in this blog post!) ⭐️
- Food Allergies: Triggered by foods like nuts, dairy, and shellfish.
- Pet Allergies: Reactions to proteins found in animals
- Dust Allergies: Caused by dust mites or mold.
Over-the-counter medications 💊
Antihistamines
These block the action of histamine, which is inducing your allergy symptoms, so these are great for relieving sneezing, itching, and runny noses 🤧
First Generation Antihistamines
- This option is great if you are looking for quick relief, however, they can cause side effects such as drowsiness 🥱
- This is good if you are having a hard time sleeping from the symptoms but if you need to stay alert then you may want to consider other options!! 💤
- Their effects also typically last 4-6 hours, so you’ll need to take them multiple times a day 🕦
- A popular option is Benadryl, or diphenhydramine
Second Generation Antihistamines.
- These are newer and less likely to cause drowsiness, so it would be more suitable if you want to take them during the day 😁
- These options are non-drowsy and are also effective for up to 24 hours, so they are perfect for daily use ✅
- Some popular options include Claritin (loratadine), Allegra (Fexofenadine) and Reactine (Cetirizine)
Decongestants
- If you’re dealing with a stuffy nose, decongestants like pseudoephedrine can help
- Some antihistamines come in combination with decongestants which can be convenient if you are experiencing a stuffy nose with other allergy symptoms 🤧
- Some options are Claritin-D, Allegra-D → The D being for decongestant!
- If you are looking for something sedating you can select the Benadryl allergy plus congestion option 😉
Important Note ‼️
- Be cautious when using decongestants if you have high blood pressure, as they can raise your blood pressure
- It would be best to speak with your pharmacist for a more personalized assessment to ensure you stay healthy and feel well! 👩⚕️
Practical Tips 📝
Besides medications, here are some things YOU can do to keep allergies at rest:
- During high pollen seasons, keep your windows closed to prevent allergens from entering your home 🪟🌼
- Air purifiers are effective at reducing indoor allergens like dust mites and pet dander 🌬️🐶
- After spending time outside, wash your hands and face to remove any allergens. Showering and changing clothes can also help 🚿
